If you’re new to the world of airplants—or even a seasoned collector—it’s natural to want to give them the best care possible. One question we get often at Plant Babies Terrariums is:
"Can I water my airplants with soft water?"
The short answer? A firm no.
Here’s why, and what to use instead to keep your airplants healthy and thriving.
What Is Soft Water?
Soft water is water that’s been treated to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium. While that might sound great for plumbing and appliances, it often comes at a cost: the addition of sodium or potassium salts.
Why Soft Water Is a No-Go for Air Plants
Airplants (Tillandsia) absorb water and nutrients directly through their leaves—not their roots like most houseplants. This makes them extra sensitive to what’s in their water.
Here’s what happens when you use soft water:
- Salt buildup: The sodium or potassium used to soften water can build up on the leaves over time, potentially blocking their ability to absorb moisture.
- Leaf burn or spotting: Salts can damage the delicate trichomes (those fuzzy, silvery hairs on the leaves), leading to brown spots, leaf curl, or tip burn.

- Poor hydration: Even though soft water feels “gentle,” it may actually leave your plant more dehydrated, because it can interfere with how well your airplant takes in water.
So, What Kind of Water Should You Use?
Your airplants will thank you if you use:
-
Rainwater – The ideal choice. It’s naturally free of salts and rich in trace elements.
- Spring or filtered water – A great backup if rainwater isn’t accessible.
- Tap water (if not softened) – This is what we use at Plant Babies Terrariums - just let the water sit overnight so the chlorine dissipates. If you have a water softener, you'll have to turn on the bypass valve when preparing to water your airplants. Or you may have a tap in your house (like the cold water kitchen tap) that is not connected to your water softener.
Avoid distilled water, too—it lacks essential minerals and can actually draw nutrients out of your plants.
Final Thoughts
Your airplants may be low-maintenance, but they still need clean, mineral-balanced water to thrive. Avoid soft water, and they’ll reward you with vibrant leaves and long-lasting life.
